Apple releases new iPhone XR : a new device for mobile auditing
A few days ago, Apple announced its 3 new iPhones for 2018: iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, and iPhone XR (pronounced “ten-R”), and it’s the iPhone XR that we’re excited about. Although we wouldn’t call it ‘cheap’ at $749, out of the 3 new iPhones, it’s the most cost-effective for manufacturers needing mobile devices for company use.
The Pros of the iPhone XR for Mobile Auditing
The iPhone XR is boosting a bigger screen than the iPhone SE, and a newer, faster A12 Bionic processor as the iPhone XS Max (but without the $1,099 price tag).
The battery life of the XR might also be longer than its more expensive versions, as Apple gave a somewhat cryptic “it lasts 90 minutes longer than the iPhone 8 Plus.”
The storage options of the iPhone XR are 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Since the Beacon Quality iOS app doesn’t store photos on your device, the only need for storage are for the actual apps running on the phone.
You can start pre-ordering the iPhone XR on October 19, 2018, with sales starting officially on October 26th. This is almost a month later than the sales for the iPhone XS and XS Max.
What about the older iPhones?
Apple has discontinued its older versions of the iPhone X, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and the iPhone SE. The 6S and SE lines were the last of the iPhones to have a traditional headphone jack, but those are unnecessary features for manufacturers looking for Apple devices for mobile auditing.
If you’re looking for the most cost-effective new device, then the iPhone 7, which starts at $450, would be a good choice. The 4.7” screen is a smaller than the iPhone XR, which boasts a 6.1” view. The camera resolution holds steady at 12 megapixels.
Some of the most notable differences between the iPhone 7 and the iPhone XR are: screen size, processor, touch vs facial ID recognition (for added security), wireless charging, and color options. See the graphic below for a comparison chart:
Did you notice one other big difference? Color! the iPhone XR comes with blue and yellow options, a bright difference from the traditional black, white, gold or rose-gold options. With the devices boasting more noticeable colors, much like a bright vest, we’d highly recommend these specific devices for use on the plant floor for security and safety reasons.
iOS App for Beacon Quality
Earlier this year, we announced the iOS Apple app of Beacon Quality. The app represents an improvement over the web-based version of Beacon Quality in terms of conducting mobile audits, specifically when users aren’t in WiFi range. Since the app downloads data directly to a smartphone or tablet, users can start and complete audits anywhere in the plant. The Android app of Beacon Quality will be available within a few months!
